What effective MTC practice looks like

Three things separate practice that works from practice that doesn't: randomised order, 6-second timing and type-in answers. Chanting the 7× table in order is nothing like the MTC. The check jumps between tables and forces a retrieval every six seconds — that's a completely different cognitive skill.

Free MTC-format practice

MathStar's Soundcheck drills use the identical 6-second window as the MTC and weight the harder tables the way the real check does. Kids drill mixed tables, get instant feedback, and the app quietly revisits the facts they were slowest on. It's free on the App Store and doesn't need a school code.

The 6-week practice plan

  • Week 1 — Audit. Run three untimed mock checks and note the three slowest tables. These are the priority.
  • Weeks 2–3 — Isolate. Daily 10-minute drill on those three tables. Random order from day one.
  • Weeks 4–5 — Integrate. Full mixed-table drills in 6-second mode. Aim for the child to answer within 3–4 seconds so there's a buffer.
  • Week 6 — Full mocks. Two full 25-question runs in real MTC format. Keep them light — the goal is familiarity, not pressure.

How much practice is enough?

10 minutes a day for 4–6 weeks is usually enough for a Year 4 pupil who already knows their tables to hit ~24/25. If a child is starting from cold — no fluent recall of any table — plan on 8–10 weeks. Longer sessions rarely help; the science of retrieval practice is on the side of short, frequent, spaced sessions.

Practice mistakes that waste time

  • Chanting the tables in order. Trains sequential memory, not retrieval.
  • Paper worksheets under no time pressure. The MTC's difficulty is the timer.
  • Only practising the tables the child likes. Time should be weighted toward the weakest tables, not the strongest.
  • Marathon Sunday sessions. Ten minutes daily beats an hour weekly, every time.

Signs your child is ready

They can answer a random 6-second question from any table between 2× and 12× within 3 seconds, at least 22 times out of 25. If they can do that a fortnight before the check, they're ready — spend the last two weeks on light maintenance and calm.

Frequently asked

How is MathStar's Soundcheck different from other apps?

It uses the exact 6-second timing of the MTC, weights harder tables the way the real check does, and adapts to each child's slowest facts.

Is Soundcheck free?

Yes. Free to download, free to play, no ads.

How many practice sessions before the MTC?

For a child with reasonable table knowledge, 30–40 sessions of 10 minutes each — roughly six weeks of daily practice.

Is paper practice a waste of time?

Not entirely — worksheets are useful when a child first learns a new table. But the MTC's difficulty is the timer, so digital timed practice is what actually moves scores.
